How to Be More Creative

I love being creative. I like making my planner pretty, making my own wall art, random little crafts or art projects, and of course blogging. I discovered my love for creativity in high school. As I've gotten older it's definitely gotten harder to find time to be creative, but it's something I make time for and incorporate into my life.

I really think everyone should find ways to be more creative because it keeps you young (really it does), it gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment when you've made something, and it can be a source of happiness and inspiration in your life. And being creative doesn't have to mean you're a world class painter. You could be creative by drawing zentangles, crocheting a blanket, writing a short story, photographing nature, dancing, or whatever creative outlet feels best to you!

How to Be More Creative

If being more creative sounds good to you, here are some ways you can be more creative:

Just create something.

Starting can be the hardest part of a project and we can get hung up on what to create and trying to think of the perfect subject. That's usually when you're best to just start - anything! Write the first thing that comes to mind and see where it takes you. Draw one line and see what it can turn into. You can always go back and change things, so just start creating and see what you end up with.

Don't worry about the finished product.

If you're too worried about getting everything just right, you might not get very far. Enjoy the process instead and let your creativity flow.

Join a challenge.

There are sooo many different challenges to join. This summer I jump-started my creativity by joining the #MakeYourMarkJuly challenge on Instagram. There's always a challenge on Instagram whether it's for photos or doodles. November is also National Novel Writing Month, so if that's something you're interested in hop over to the official site and join in!

How to Be More Creative

Make it part of your routine.

By now you might know that I'm a bit of a routine person. It's for a good reason! Once you make something part of your routine, it becomes so natural you don't even think about it. If you want to be more creative, making it a part of your routine will make being creative just like breathing! Doodle a little something every morning. Crochet while watching your favorite show in the evenings. Write a page for your book when you get home from work each day. These simple things make being creative a part of your everyday routine and you'll quickly see progress in your work!

Try new things.

Part of being creative is trying new things, experimenting, and thinking in different ways. You might not think it, but trying a new recipe, visiting a different museum, or going for a little excursion on the weekend can get your creativity flowing.

Surround yourself with creative people.

If you're with people who are constantly creating awesome things, you're going to be inspired to create, too. They can also give you tips or pointers if you need them. Of course, craft nights are always better with friends, too!
