Life Lately

I've been trying to make it to the gym when I'm home on the weekends. I thought I would be able to go for walks around campus, but it's been raining like everyday so that hasn't really worked. I've cut back on soda and watching what I'm eating more, so I have lost 5 pounds this month. I bought a new gym outfit to celebrate my little achievement.

My mom's birthday was last Wednesday, so we celebrated it last Saturday when I was home. I set up the table for her birthday with some frosted sugar cookies, birthday napkins, her card and present from me, and a bright table cloth. 

On the few sunny days we've had around here, I went for walks outside. My family's old dog went for a walk with me in the pasture at home and I got some nice photos of our barn. Some days I can really appreciate the country life.

I've also appreciated all of the flowers blooming, like these cute peonies.

And of course I've been doing LOTS of studying with my summer class. I have one more week left, and then I'm already done with American History! It's so crazy how quickly we go through all of this information. We have four weeks to get through Pre-Columbian America all the way through the 21st century.

Planner Love

I've always had a bit of an obsession with stationary. I've collected cute notebooks since I was in middle school. I've had an overwhelming amount of pens and pencils for like ever. I have a never ending stock pile of notepads and sticky notes.

I also like being organized and have been relying on planners to keep me on top of things since high school. I always search out the prettiest planners and I started color coding my planner for school, family stuff, plans with friends, work, and personal stuff.

I always thought I was alone in this obession, but then I got on instagram this year (finally) and found out about the planner community which not only encourages my obsession with pretty pictures of planners and stationary, but also tells me exactly where to go to get these goodies. It's awful. I've been coveting these picture perfect planners for a little over 2 months now. I'm pretty sure if I added it all up, I've spent an ungodly amount of money on stickers, washi, stamps, sticky notes, page flags, and note pads.

But the results are so pretty! My planner is so cute now and I love opening it up. Instead of just looking at a boring dated notebook with scribbles on it, I open up my planner to bright colors and cute stickers. I just love it. And I love making lists of things to do or buy on my sticky notes and notepads. Aw! It's just so wonderful. I love it. I'm an addict.

Wish I Was There: New York

My sister is in New York City this week and I am so excited for her. It sounds like she's having a lot of fun and loving her time there. Of course, being the wanderlust filled creature that I am, I've created my own dream vacation to New York in my head...and I'm a little jealous that she gets to go do some of these things this week.

Favorite Posts...So Far

I've been doing this blog now for 5 months. I've written over 40 posts now and I'm going to share a few of my favorite posts so far with you.

This post is the first one I ever wrote. It's one of my favorites because it's all about my favorite place I've been to - Costa Rica.I love thinking back to all the fun and amazing experiences I had there and I talk about some of the places I got to explore during my six weeks there.

I enjoy reading these posts. I think it's interesting to see what other people carry with them in their purses and school bags. I talk a little bit about how I've organized everything and what I'm carrying to class everyday.

Thanks to my mom, I love decorating and looking at other people's homes. Redecorating my room was one of my favorite things, and biggest project, that I did at the beginning of the new semester in January. I really love how it turned out and I've changed very little since then. 

This post has 2 amazing recipes I tried out and absolutely loved. The fresh guacamole is so yummy, refreshing, and so simple to make. The vegetarian minestrone soup was my first time making soup and it turned out amazing. I really enjoyed it, especially since I was cooking some of the vegetables and beans for the first time, too.

During my Spring Break I made 2 fun and simple crafts perfect for Spring. I decorated flower pots to use for storage containers in my room and this DIY quote-art. I feel like they both came out really well and I still enjoy looking at them.

This post from last month still has some of my favorite things on it, and I think you'll be really into them, too. The Lister's Gotta List Challenge is still going on with a new set of lists to make for May and a new challenge to be coming out in June. Decorating my planner is something that makes being organized 10x more fun and gives me an outlet for creativity. The small town architecture obsession is also still going strong and makes me appreciate the little things about where I live.

Another look at what I carry around. These are the things I take with me EVERYWHERE - around campus, when I'm out and about, when I'm heading home for the weekend.

Life Lately

May is here! It's a busy month for me, but I've been enjoying my time. I had a week off of school and now I'm back at college for a summer class.

During my week off I enjoyed being a little lazy relaxing. I spent some time with my family and grandparents, went to my siblings' high school art show, and did a little shopping.

Went for a cruise with my dad in his 1969 Impala - aka his pride and joy. I don't understand what thrills him about this car, but it's his thing. My dad and I got on exceptionally well during my week at home.

I went to the local used book store with my brother and picked up four books for less than $4. It's a book lover's paradise.

I am totally obsessed with all of the flowers blooming right now. I took a billion pictures of all the flowers at home and at the stores.

After my week relaxing, I'm back at college and I've been busy ever since I got here Friday. I moved from one apartment to another this weekend. Friday I packed up stuff in my old apartment so that way I would be ready to go when my Dad and brother came in town to help me move on Saturday. Saturday I did some more packing. I felt a little sad taking everything off the wall, even though I was ready to move on to a new place.

Saturday my dad, brother, and I moved my stuff into my new apartment (after scrubbing it down) and grabbed lunch before they left. I got my stuff organized for the most part and my flatmate/best friend moved in. I'm really excited to be living with her during our last year here.

Sunday I put up the decorations in my room and ran to a couple stores with my friend for apartment necessities. We met up with her family (who live closer) for Mother's Day at Olive Garden.

Monday was the first day of class. I'm taking American History and class starts at 7:30 am. Getting up at 6:30 is a little difficult for me, but I'm making it to class on time. History is my minor so I'm enjoying the class, which makes it easier to wake up so early, pay attention in class, and get the assignments done.

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day is just around the corner. I always try to create a good sized list of possible gifts for my mom because her birthday is on the 20th of May, and because I always buy extra gifts for my siblings who tend to wait until the absolute last minute and don't have time to run to the store.

Gifts to buy

- A nice stationary set. My mom is always using list pads and sticky notes, so I found a super cute set of notepads for her.
- Flowers. My mom loves gardening so I can always grab some flowers for her to add to her garden or....
- Gardening tools. Since she does lots of gardening, she could always use a new set of shovels or gardening gloves. You can also make this into a super cute gift basket in a flower pot.
- Fabric. My mom's hobby is quilting. Fabric can be extensive ($40 for a jelly roll), but you can get a charm pack (ie a set of pre-cut squares for quilting) for as little as $10.
- Gift basket. I think it's so fun to put together a gift basket because you can put in a little bit of everything. Last year I gave my mom an "Orange you glad you're my mom" basket and everything in it was orange. 

Gifts to make

Bake her favorite sweet. Moms like to have food made for them, whether it be brownies, cake, or cookies (family recipes are always best).
A book of all the reasons why she's the best mom. You can either design pages on the computer and print it out, or get a small notebook and decorate it with scrapbook paper, washi tape, stickers, and journal cards. Either way, it will be a very thoughtful gift.

2015 Goals Update

I can't believe April has already flown by. I feel like it was just January and I was setting goals for a new year, bundling up to go outside and prepping for another semester. But here it is already May 2 and I'm reviewing how I'm doing on my goals 4 months into the new year, walking outside in shorts and t-shirts, and enjoying a week off of school before starting a couple summer courses.

Focus on the positive. March was ROUGH, but I feel like April has been a pretty good month. I've managed to stay positive through finals, weird roommate stuff, stressful classes, and the regular ups and downs of life. When I start to zone in on the negative stuff, I just remind myself its a part of life, but that there are many other wonderful things going on, too. The last week or two I noticed I'm not being as aware as I need to be to stay inspired, so I've been making it a point to look around at nature as I walk to class and take pictures of the little things that make me happy.

Be content and spend less. I feel like I've been rocking at this goal in April. March, as mentioned earlier, was rough so I did a little retail therapy. In April I really felt like I have everything I need and when I went out shopping I didn't find much that I absolutely loved. When I'm out and thinking about buying something I ask myself if it will make me happier or make my life easier/better in some way. Usually the answer is no, I want it just because. When that's my answer I know I want it to just fill a void that I need to fix on my own.

Stress less, smile more. This goal is pretty difficult for me. I can't help but stress over getting all my assignments done, being there for my family and friends, and what the future holds. It's really hard for me not to stress and obsess over little setbacks. I've been working on this though. When I notice myself starting to stress I remind myself that I can't control the future by worrying about it or ask myself what is really the worse that can happen. Really, what's the worst possible outcome if I hand in an assignment late? The teacher takes a few point off? I miss ONE grade? I can bounce back from those little setback.  Plus, they won't affect my future in the grand scheme of things.

Study French. This has definitely been on the back burner. I have not studied French once in April...unless we count listening to French rap. I've passively listened to French and thought a little in French, but I haven't actively studied, learned, or improved in French. I'm hoping this summer I'll make some gains on this goal and make it a part of my daily routine so I can continue it in to the fall semester.

Write daily in a diary. I've had some weeks where I try to write about each day at the end of the week, and that usually fails. I don't remember the little things that made each day good at the end of the week and the days run together so I'm not even sure if it happened on Wednesday or Thursday. I have been writing in my bullet journal everyday and getting into listing everyday thanks to the Reset Girl, so I am adding more forms of journaling into the mix.
